NZ has no shortage of these. You can like peer out your back window and get a view like this almost anywhere. But it was a beautiful day and on our drive back, I stopped to take a souvenir shot to send home.

I wasn′t sure I’d completely succeeded in capturing one of those magazine shots when a surfer’s caught a perfect pipe and riding it with a mix of intense concentration and zen-like tranquility. This was probably as close as I’d managed to get to drama.

Having surfed here, Marg explained to me how the beach was generally structured. Closer to the entrance, beginners were dealing mostly with white-wash. As you walked down the beach, the boards floated further out where the waves were just starting to break. I started wishing I’d had a 400mm prime telephoto to get closer to the more experienced surfers.

Murawai is sort of the local West Auckland surf spot, more so than Piha or 9 Mile, partly because of its accessibility, but also because the surf and breaks are pretty safe here. Remembering this picture and how pleasant it felt that spring morning with the promise of summer in the breeze has made me love this shot more.
